Be Aware
• On average men ejaculate after five minutes of penetration.
• 25 to 40 percent of men report premature ejaculation.
• The roots of premature ejaculation can be psychological, and can be treated through psychotherapy and relationship therapy. Unhealthy relationships, sexual hang-ups or fears, and many other anxieties and stresses can cause premature ejaculation, and should be addressed accordingly.
HOW TO AVOID A MISFIRE
1 Pre-party.
In the hour before an anticipated sexual encounter, masturbate to extend the period before your body will be ready to orgasm again. If you drink alcohol, have a drink; alcohol in moderation can dull your sexual response and slow things down.
2 Distract yourself.
Perform complicated mental exercises, such as listing the letters of the alphabet in reverse order, or doing complex addition (e.g. adding 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 . . .)
3 Think boring or unsexy thoughts.
Think about household chores you don’t enjoy. Relive your most embarrassing moments, ranked and sorted by different phases of your life (childhood, adolescence, college . . . ) Think about dreary, work-related problems, unless they involve sexy coworkers.
4 Mentally repeat a mantra.
Silently chant a meaningless made-up phrase or a particularly memorable but unsexy commercial jingle in your mind during the sexual act. Focus all your mental energy on the syllables of the phrase.
5 Breathe deeply.
Oxygenating your blood can help focus your attention and calm your mind.
6 Make noise.
Moaning and screaming during sex can release pent up tension and delay orgasm. It may also please your partner and bring you closer in sync.
7 Get uncomfortable.
Change position to anything less comfortable than what you’re doing. If this becomes comfortable, change again.
8 Stop.
When you feel your orgasm coming, stop what you are doing and wait for the feeling to pass. Reengage when you feel ready.
